Virgin Mask

Being DigitalThe BodyTechnologies

We came up with the idea of 'if men also have a mark to determine if they are virgins'. Let women also have the right to identify men, to add a "hymen" device to men. Critically to think about the current society, whether the standards and pressure between men and women are the same. Through this device to give women power. So we made an installation where we chose to create and mimic the appearance of a vagina based on the visual basis of women's "sex panties", and used a substance containing a clear, sticky substance to simulate the breaking of the hymen. When a male genital organ enters the device, a "marker" in the female vagina leaves a mark on the male genital organ, indicating that the male is no longer a virgin. "Hymen" is an ironic symbol that highlights the absurdity of the notion that a woman's worth is tied to her hymen. It also reveals the societal pressure on men to prove their masculinity through sexual conquest and the perpetuation of harmful gender stereotypes. The act of a man tearing this membrane from his genitals is similar to the act of a woman repairing the hymen, reinforcing the idea that the hymen is a social construct rather than a biological fact. And question how the term "virgin" was created to control and influence public thinking about gender responsibility. Virgin or not virgin is just a label. The most influential was the concept of the so-called "hymen", which was fostered by traditional sex education. It is the representative of patriarchal social and cultural oppression of women, and the only standard to test whether a woman is "chaste" in traditional sex education. Under the patriarchal structure, men are generally regarded as sexual subjects and women as sexual objects, while male "chastity" is questioned as lacking initiative and charm. This "chastity" discourse is still prevalent in today's increasingly open society, and may be internalized into the moral discipline of women, giving women a virginity complex. Women are more sexually conservative and passive than men because the existing environment does not encourage women to be open.

Therefore, through this installation, we also hope to express our attitude towards the symbolization of "hymen" in today's society, which is a work that satirizes the absurdity of patriarchal politics on the female body, and opposes the social combination of the purity of women and "hymen". Only through the "hymen" to judge the quality and character of women, it is too ridiculous. But when we see that there are still many women willing to do "hymen repair", it shows that the patriarchal society for the concept of women is seriously influenced. The integrity of the hymen should not be used as a basis for determining whether a woman remains a virgin. However, some cultures still have the misconception that any incomplete hymen is stigmatized and rejected by men and their families. Some women feel so stressed that they take the drastic step of hymen repair. That way, they can keep their virginity intact on their wedding night. The concept of virginity itself has a lot to do with gender inequality. The concept of virginity is the product of patriarchal discipline on women, which reflects the oppression of male structure on women.
