Through Our Eyes: An Exhibition of Personal Narratives through Visual Art

Breaking stereotypes and amplifying voices: A collective narrative on systemic injustice and media representation.
Justice Equality and MisinformationGenderNarrativesCommunication

What does it mean to see the world from a certain point of view? How can we think about the power dynamics in the world and the relation of it  to the mainstream media/ Western dominated media? How does this relate to an unbiased point of view? How does this create inequalities all around the world? Coming from underrepresented countries, how can we respond to this inequality from our own personal points of view? How can we find alternative ways of reaching information?

We believe that one way is by empowering diversity of cultures by storytelling, communication, contribution & art.

Our group response consisted of a collective narrative of personal stories and experiences. We realised that we all came from different regions of the world where justice and inequality is experienced by communities in similar ways. After talking to each other, our insight was that our regions all suffer from systematic problems like gender inequalities, political deception and racism while western media often fail to tell the complete stories. There is a lack of visibility of the local people by not telling their stories from their perspectives. This sometimes creates stereotypes of which might be happening around the world, all based on what the media decided to show.

At a later stage in the project we decided to give everyone in the group the space to develop their own themes from their home countries or culture, and tell their own personal stories that reflect on the brief about justice, inequality and misinformation. Afterwards, we started to gather content that would inspire us to create an artwork that would later be included in a virtual exposition allowing anyone with a link to view the exposition.

This method of delivery sounded like a very practical way to bring everything together and an accessible way to share it with others. Once the exposition space was ready, I had the opportunity to see the variety of work that we had done and how well it was put together. I had the opportunity to appreciate the artistic value that comes after a reflection of one's cultural identity and what that means when telling stories.
