Night-time Narratives

Our aim was to raise awareness and create a space for reflection on the connection between sleep issues and mental health
Caring SocietyMental Health

The following AcrossRCA project was part of the Caring Society theme and consisted of a temporary installation around mental health and lifestyle. Our aim was to raise awareness and create a space for reflection on the connection between sleep issues and mental health, while also serving as a critique, reminding us that true rest comes from within and that our dependence on material possessions is often a distraction from the deeper issues affecting our sleep. The installation was designed to have two main features. The first feature was a compilation of objects and messages from people expressing their anxieties, worries, serenity, and calmness related to the theme of rest and sleep. These objects and messages were displayed around a space in order for the viewer to find empathy and relate to others who might be struggling with the same issues. The second feature is called the ‘Pillow Machine’ which were several machines distributed around the room. These machines allowed the viewers to place objects or written memories inside them that they associate with sources of bad sleep. By transforming these items into pillows, the Pillow Machine encouraged the viewer to confront their struggles and find comfort in the physical form. This process of personal reflection highlighted the importance of mental health and its impact on our ability to get the rest we all need.
