- Farting is a natural biological process that occurs in the human body. It is a normal function of the digestive system, but it is often accompanied by a social stigma that causes embarrassment and shame. People may try to suppress their flatulence or hide it from others due to fear of social disapproval or ridicule. Our project will explore the relationship between people's embarrassment of farting and society, and the cultural and social factors that shape our attitudes towards this natural bodily function.
- The motivation of our project is to explore embarrassment and break down taboos in the hope that this would lead to open discussion and reduction of harm. The specificity of the project is placed with a focus on flatulence, as a normal human biological behaviour that has long been taboo. We want to point out what is taboo, and what damage might arise from avoiding talking about it. With this work, we hope to encourage people to accept embarrassment and discomfort and visualise social contradictions.
- The outcome consists of an installation that will be placed within a public area at the RCA, as an architectural condition that forces confrontations. Using humour, irony, and satire as a device to navigate the critical subject. Specifically, a sculpture depicting the rear end of a person with bubbles coming out of the rectum. In a material sense, the sculpture will include a battery-powered bubble machine, inflatables and foam. We are drawn to investigate how we can talk about serious issues with the help of humour, satire and playfulness.
