Cassie Vaughan

An abstracted landscape using oil pastel and paint and comprised of ragged, frenetic blocks of blue, green, white and pink.

Cassie uses unintentional marks and overlooked materials to create nature based spaces that question the control of the maker and the dominance of human presence in ecosystems. Layering printed elements with drawing, painting and collage, the work explores notions of excavation, environmental dislocation and spaces between decay and growth.

Current work explores the concept of “umwelten”; the multiple worlds experienced simultaneously by all organisms, how these worlds interlink and how they are disrupted by extinctions. Cassie is trying to articulate the haunting presence of these “gaps” and the need for healing via mark making.
